May is the new August for those of us who've been abruptly abandoned by Dr. Paul Weston and the patients we've become attached to, leaving us in free fall. For me, this is far more stressful than two weeks in August without Dr. Pearlman. Despite all the hours on his couch, I didn't buy into the concept of transference until there was Gabriel Byrne. I'm a television writer and understand the value of creating a cliffhanger final episode to compel an audience to return. But this goes way beyond gentle teasing. It borders on viewer abuse. How can we enjoy bluefish in the Hamptons, lobsters in Maine or cherries in the city when we're agonizing over Paul, April, Walter, Mia, Oliver, Luke and Bess, each of whom we left in crisis? Shouldn't the American Psychiatric Association compel HBO to provide an emergency number we can call when we're too distressed to deal with our own financial and personal problems because of "In Treatment" separation anxiety? Making old episodes available On Demand is of little value. Watching shows we've seen has all the allure of eating day-old sushi. My preferred coping mechanism is denial. The only way I can get through the summer is to convince myself that April's tumor will respond to the chemo and she'll rethink her decision to terminate with Paul, a headhunter will recruit Walter and he'll decline an offer to be a CEO, Alex's father will go to a retreat and forgive Paul, Oliver will get into basketball, lose weight and feel less alienated, and Mia will develop self-esteem, at least temporarily, as a result of being named one of New York's top lawyers in New York Magazine. Oh sure, that will lead to her getting a stalker, but we can deal with that next season. As for Paul, I'll take over where Gina has failed by rescuing him when I spot him at the Brooklyn Fairway about to head into the organic produce department, where I've just seen his client, April, and her mother. The scene, as I imagine it: FADE IN: EXT. BROOKLYN FAIRWAY - DAY A magnificent, sunny, spring day. With the water in the b.g. Paul and Sybil are sitting at a table, drinking iced coffee. He has stubble and is low spirited. SYBIL ...no, the woman with April was definitely her mother. She was putting pesticide-free broccoli into the cart and rubbing April's back. PAUL I'm so grateful that you diverted me. Running into her would have been awkward. It's one of the professional hazards for a therapist who lives near the office. SYBIL You weren't exactly trying to avoid it. Paul reflects on this. After a beat: PAUL I'm not sure I know what you mean by that. SYBIL You never heard of Fresh Direct? Paul laughs. SYBIL (CONT.) You can get your food delivered. Paul nods. SYBIL (CONT.) I'm not the therapist here, but could it be that you want to run into your patients? Paul looks at her, clearly impressed by her insight. SYBIL (CONT.) Gina hasn't brought this up, but you seem lonely. You've made no effort to create any kind of social life in New York. Paul's reaction reveals he knows this is true. SYBIL (CONT.) When you asked Kate to get back together, was that what you really wanted, or was it just easier than starting over? Paul mulls this over. SYBIL It's understandable that you don't want patients seeing your profile on Match.com. Paul nods. SYBIL (CONT.) I have a friend I'd like you to meet. She's... PAUL (interrupts) That's very... SYBIL (interrupts) Not a blind date. You'll come to dinner at our house. I'll invite some other people too. This woman is terrific. And age appropriate. What have you got to lose? Despite his initial knee-jerk hesitation, he's warming to the idea. SYBIL (CONT.) You look better without the stubble. Shave before you come. Paul smiles, touches his chin. SYBIL (CONT.) I'll make sure she shaves too. They laugh. FADE OUT.

Hey Justta: It's great to read a posting from you...welcome back!! Oh, I totally know what you mean...I'll be fighting the temptation to STAY in Germany myself...I love being there and will have to tear myself away again. Oooh, I'm sorry you're not in Frankfurt...we could have met in the Hauptbahnhof for a bite of Wienerwald roasted chicken....YUM!! But what about Elinancy's trip? She's got the grand gig...Italy is just gonna be a blast....and she gets to catch Andrea Bocelli in St. Mark's square, too....WOW!! It just doesn't get any better than that. If he does Besame Mucho and The Prayer, I'm just gonna cry....just cry I tell ya! Hey, Mad Handsome filmed a movie with Richard Burton in Venice, yes? Wouldn't it be fun to go see the hotel where he stayed while filming WAGNER? I wonder what local restaurants served him food? Now THAT could be a fun way to spend a half-hour in Italy...retracing Mad Handsome's steps in Venice, hmmmmmmmmm?

Oooh, oooh, Elinancy, have a great time in Tuscany and Venice. The men in both places are quite friendly and most of them are kinda cute....dunno if you're single, available and looking, but Tuscany and Venice are great places to have a blast. Brava Bellisima!! I'm sorry to hear about your colleague...caretaking is such a draining endeavor, but you gave so much to your colleague by being there....I'm sure you were a Godsend. So, have a great time in Italy. You deserve it. I'll be in Germany later this month, and won't have time to swing down to Italy, but I'll think about you eating great food, listening to great music (find Andrea Bocelli, Girl), seeing great sights, shopping in great piazzas, zipping down streets in a snazzy vehicle, floating down canals in a gondola, looking at those grand doges and villas, soaking up the Italian vibe, just knowing that we're both underneath the same European sky and timezone. Yeah Baby!! La dolce vita!!

Thanks elinancy for the link to Gabe's pic. I am unfamiliar with the procedure to post it here. LL, you can create a Google Alert for any email address, just go to Google and enter Gabe's name.

Venga! Venga! The more the merrier. It's my first trip so I'm excited. I just sent my letter to HBO. In short I reminded Mr. Lombard that for years they have been telling us that "It's not TV. It's HBO." Time to put their money where their mouth is. If you purport to present quality television then you have to be willing to pay for quality shows.

Thanks, LL. It's been a difficult winter and spring. Care-giving for an elderly former colleague and friend who passed away in early April. I had less than a month to clean out her senior living facility apartment. I no sooner finished when her condominium sold and I needed to tie up all the loose ends there. I did manage to watch IT2 (sometimes in marathon sessions) and I peeked in here whenever I could but there just wasn't enough time or energy to fully participate. Leaving for Italy soon (a week at a villa in Tuscany and then Venice) to recharge.

Good lookin' out, Elinancy!! Thanks a bunch. Where have you been? Been missing you on the threads all season long. Of course, it got a bit hairy from time-to-time, so I can't blame you for sailing calmer seas, but, hey, we do miss you, ya know.....good to see you back, if only for a half-minute to bring the photo goods. Toodles.......

I simply went from one drug dependancy to another...I am now mainlining "Nurse Jackie" on Showtime and gently lovingly..letting Paul go I "simply" couldn't do that. Love Edie Falco. (But switching premium channels must make HBO nervous!) Bottom line is: It's not about Paul.

Don't tease, Misc...share with your friends here on the threads....post that puppy, Woman....PUH-LEEEZ!! Mad Handsome didn't show up at the Tony Awards on Sunday...I combed the footage in slow-motion, searching the audience, zooming in on every raven-haired, blue-eyed guy in the audience....alas, no Gabriel. So, fresh photos are a must-see. Thanks, Misc.
