My ratings are as follows: Mia = 5 She's irreverent, bright and gutsy. High on cerebral wattage, but not too much of a censor between her brain and her lips. Acting could not be better. Walter = 4 Again stellar acting; John Mahoney really captures the essence of that character type. April =2 (and that's being generous). From the first show forward her episodes have not held my attention. I have tried to discipline myself and watch all the way through, but have not been successful. I don't know if it's the storyline or her acting, it just doesn't ring true for me. Oliver= 4. I think the young man does a really good job of portraying a scapegoat caught between two angry people, but his parents are annoying (although I'm sure this is by design). Gina wavers between a 4 and a 5. As I've mentioned in previous posts, she's technically proficient as a psychotherapist, but I find her "coldness" somewhat offputting. This doesn't negate the fact that she is a tour de force actress. -- Edited by DSM4 at 05/02/2009 9:56 PM PDT

Mia: 5 (You never know what she's going to say next) April: 4 (A sick young woman who should have her whole life ahead of her gets my sympathy) Oliver: 3 (I like Paul's interaction with children but really am bugged by the parents) Walter: 2 (The acting is great but I'm not into his story yet) Gina: 5 (I like the peek into Paul's personal life) -- "I know you think I'm a dirty chinchilla" - Lois - "Big Love"

Well they say "good art" will elicit a strong reaction - good or bad doesn't matter - the intent is to move the viewer.. So with that in mind the only character I would give anything other than a 5 to is Oliver and he's a 4.. Only because I believe that Oliver (not his parents - they add the dimention to his sessions) is a kid who has not really formed his ego fully and therefore I'm not totally convinced that this process is good for him - that said he does a wonderful job and so perhaps this is my own concern and not relevant to "art".. I feel (if this were real life and not art) that "harm" could actually be done to a child in therapy.. but "Paul" has altered his approach to Oliver appropriately IMO..

Oh, and for the record: Mia -5 (I've posted all about her character elsewhere) Paul - 5 (I consider him one of this season's characters because he was largely unexplored last season) Gina - 4 (as with Paul, but a 4 because she is a little cold and removed from the series... like a judge) Oliver - 4 (only because of the last episode .. before that he was a 1) April - 2 (too tragic, too much, too unbelievable a storyline) Walter - 3 (but he's growing on me) Oliver's parents - 1 (cardboard characters both)

1. Mia: 3. Interesting story, but the character's personality is so grating that I'm not really liking her too much. And I swear to god she never, ever blinks! Must have two glass eyes or something. 2. April: 5. Grand slam w/ both story and character. 3. Oliver & parents: 4. Didn't have much interest at first, but the kid is winning me over. 4. Walter: 3. Just don't care either way. At least he doesn't whine. 5. Gina: 5. She's way better this year than last. She's finally drilling down into Paul, which makes the whole show better.. Won't you please take a moment to rate your interest in this season's characters? a score of 5 = extremely high interest a score of 4 = fairly interesting a score of 3 = mildly interesting a score of 2 = can take or leave the character(s) a score of 1 = no interest at all

Ok here is my rating lists as per your request Mia...3..interesting because she is a 'strong independant type" female..yet turned off cuz she may be far more unstable than thought Also her combativeness lends me no compassion for her. April...5 LiKe sophie last year..it is the youngish female characters (18-25) that ring some kind of bell for me personally. april is attractive for her independance and tough exterior hiding great vulnerability underneath etc Oliver & Parents 3 Mildly interesting as a study in divorce and children (its paul who is a star here) Walter 4 Even tho his issue is so generational..,he is a fascinating study of a classic male persona of cynicism &defensive resistance and with paul as a 5 here..I eagerly anticipate the "unpeeling of the onion" Gina 4 i have always been interested in her position as a mentor/sounding board for Paul. the wise earthmother (?) spot is gentle and insightful. I like her better this year. in conclusion what your rating list has done has confirmed where i have always leaned...It is the therapist I am most interested in..Paul Weston. He is a ten..Everything revolves really around him and his training and whether he can integrate who he is as a doctor with who he is as a man. -- You get what you concentrate on...there is no other rule
