Effects in True Blood

What do you think of the special effects in True Blood? Do you have a favorite such as the vampires' swift movement, teeth unsheathing, V trips or Sam's shapeshifting?

TB vamps are so cool. I think it is because they can pass as human and then CRUNCH! Out comes the fangs! I like that CH made vamps immune to all of the cheesy vampire weaknesses: Garlic, the cross/church, mirror images, their face changing when they are in "attack" mode (some movies make them look like bats). The ones she kept are classic- the sun and staking... I also like the addition of silver causing harm. She also gave certain vampires certain advatnages. For instance Eric and Pam can fly, whereas Bill can not. It makes it more adventerous and unpredictable of the ways of the vampires.

I have three favorite vampire stories:
Interview with a Vampire
Bram Stoker's Dracula
True Blood

The thing that these all have in common is that the vampires have very human qualities. The three main characters: Louie, Dracula, and Bill all feel love so strongly to three lucky women: Claudia, Willamena, and Sookie. I think it is the love story that reels me in to vampire stories. In this sense, CH has characters that are unlike any other; not only are they less of a cliche, but they also have hearts. Awww... cute, right?

I like the bloody demise of the Vampires, I'm tired of the same old smoke to ash.
the fangs remind me of switch blades sharp
I love the show all around, plus this is the first season, like wine gets better with age. plus they probably had a budget, and when it was renewed at the 2nd showing well now they will spend alittle more on makeup.
Overall I congratulate Allan Ball

I wanted to let everyone know that the redness (actually it is more like a maroon/burgundy color) is intentional... if you notice their hands the same color appears there. This is used to symbolize that they are filled with blood.... a different type... also remember they cry blood, so the redness around their pale eyes and below are completely intentional and understandable...

I also wanted to mention that Alex tan probably came from him shooting Generation Kill (7 months) in Mozambique.

I just wish that they looked uniform ALL OVER... if he is going to be "pasty" as some of you have called it, then his gorgeous body will need to be the same...

I am so jealous of that make up artist... at some point his whole body will be exposed and she will be the one doing the make up ;)...

I personally like the sound of the fangs clicking into place- it almost sounds like teeth breaking skin (think Sookie and Bill's Love scene in front of the fireplace). It has that crunch. However, it seems like some of the vamps teeth are way skinny. The good 'ole boy's teeth in the 1st episode had super thin teeth. It looked like he had toothpicks in there...
But then Bill's in episode 5 when Sookie finds Gran, Bill's teeth fly out at the sound of Sam and his are all nice, thick, white, and sharp. That's how fangs should look.

I have to agree with some of you- the gloopiness of the vamp's deaths is a bit exagerrated. I guess it can be- it's not my show, but I would like to see some smoke, or ashes or something more. Keep the goop, but add some flame (kind of like how Diane, Malcolm, and Liam's remains looked after being burned). And add as much blood as you want, but make sure that the continuity is clear. Blood needs to stay where blood was spilled, sprayed, gored, what-have-you. And no kool-aid blood please!

The swift movements are awesome. I want to see more of them. And when Bill leaves Sookie in one of her rages, I'd like to see him book it back to his house from her's. The part when he killed the Rattrays's was AWESOME. Couldn't have been better- but maybe some more torture! ]:)

The V trips did become a bit annoying. The colors are pretty and birds are singing but I can use some quality time with the cast besides watching them stare at trees and mirrors. Hopefully now that Jason is a FOTS-goer he'll skip the V. (PS- Why didn't they show Sookie's vamp blood experiences more intimately?)

The shapeshifting didn't really phase me. I have seen enough movies and shows that have characters that change from man to wolf or whatever. I am not impressed with any of them. Maybe TB will change that for me next season.

Oh, and the make-up artists do need to fine-tune their work. Eric's eyes in general and sometimes Bill's are reddish, which doesn't bother me because it intensifies their deadly appeal, but if they take the time to rim the eyes in red, make sure all skin is white. Bill doesn't always look so dead, and Eric, well, he needs to stay out of the sun like someone else said.

I hate the gloopy demise of the vampires. I picture their death to be more clean, crisp and final with no traces left of their existence.

The imitation of fast movement is a good effect. It will be interesting to see how creative the shapeshifting becomes in upcoming episodes. Right now, Sam seems to make it look like an effortless transition, but it would be exciting to see the transition in a more prolonged and horrifying way, especially if it comes to werewolves.

I'm also bothered by the lack of uniformity in 'pallidness' (is that even a word?). Bill doesn't seem to have any traces of 'vampireness' about him in his physical demeanor anymore and making poor Eric's face pasty white while his arms (and keep showing those guns!) are distinctly more rosy, leaves him looking more like The Joker than the viking hunk of undead he is written to be.

The musical choices are great, for the most part. I had trouble experiencing Fiona Apple's "First Taste" as background music for Bill's visit to meet Gran. Great song, just the wrong place for it to be used.

IMHO they need to up the budget and make the effects better.
Eric my love needs to grow his own hair or get a decent wig!

He might have red eyes from working nights!

I think the effects overall are pretty decent, but I hate the fangs. I just don't like the shape of them, or how they work or how most of them seem to be positioned on the two teeth just to either side of the front teeth. They just look better on the canines.

The blood doesn't bother me as much as the "Goop" does. I could do with less "Goop".

Thank You! Eric should be white. And what is with the redness around Eric's eyes all the time? Is he not sleeping like the dead during the day? I can see some shadowing, actually he could use a little in the cheekbone area but the redness has me for a loss. Maybe Alex could stay out of the sun during filming to help avoid the golden arms? hehehe

My favorite effect is when the vamps move in a swift manner... I really could do without the fangs sound effect and the bite sounds

I also think that the make-up could be a LOT better... Bill looks pretty great and Pam does most of the time... but the other vamps especially Eric look pretty bad... In some scenes, Eric's face looks pale, but his shoulders and gorgeous arms look a bit tanned.

Ok, back to positives... Sookie's flashbacks are GREAT!

I totally agree with you about Bubba, but I think you are right about the series ability to use the character. It's really too bad, because he was so campy in the books.

It's a bit hard for me to take explicit blood and gore on the screen, too. Books never seem so bad, but I have a pretty low limit for screen violence.

I'm with you Connie to a certain extent on the blood and gore. The scene of Bill healing Sookie after the Ratrays well I had to turn the sound down and turn away. It's my least favorite scene.

I've watched enough "making ofs" to see how they do it that I can talk myself through most of the gore. My mother in law however cannot handle any gore or stabbing stuff so she hasn't seen the show and never will, but I've shared the books with her and I send her clean links to youtube so she can share in the love for the tv characters.

As for the effects they're okay however I would have liked to have seen Bubba. They could have used real images and cg'd him in there but would have cost a pretty penny and been a lot of work. I suspect the copyrights on using his image would have been pricey and most likely the family would have just said No! LOL Too bad, because he's such an important and fun character in the books.

They could stand to have a little more consistency as well. Bill tearing up the Ratrays, but not able to bend an iron toaster just didn't jive.

I thought that was kind of my point. You know when she's trying to filter out the 'noise', but she doesn't use the old standby physical actions you see so often. Sorry if it didn't come across.

As for the gore, I don't like it, but I recognize that dog won't hunt. I'm no longer the demographic the movie & TV show creators want to capture, so they're not going to pay any attention to me on this one. On the other hand, I am the age group/economic layer the politicians want & I guess you can't have everything...
