Episode 20: Timebomb

Sookie's captivity takes an unexpected turn when Eric arrives to do his master's bidding, facing an F.O.T.S in full lockdown mode. In Bon Temps, Sam finds himself in hot water after making a gruesome discovery at Merlotte's, but Andy proves no help in coming to his defense. Sent home by Bill, Jessica and Hoyt learn that when it comes to sex, every time is the first time. Tara and Eggs get physical after partaking in a "Hunter soufflé" prepared by Maryann. After Jason pays off his debt to the vampires, Godric looks to enlighten his more single-minded followers.

If I were Sookie, I would ask Eric to ban Lorena from his territory the way Godric banned her from his. That way, at least they won't have to worry about Lorena showing up in Bon Temps to cause trouble. I thought it was interesting that Godric saved Sookie when she was being attacked by Lorena, but Eric did nothing when Longshadow attacked her. Eric isn't one tenth the vampire that Godric is. He's a punk that uses his power as Sheriff for personal reasons rather doing things for the betterment of the vampire community. What kind of vampire is so insecure in himself that he has to rely on dirty tricks to try and win over a woman from a vampire that is one sixth his age? I guess Eric has no idea how to get a woman if he can't glamour her. It must frustrate Eric to no end that Bill has a better rap than he does.

Godric was very interesting in this episode. There have been a lot of questions about why he didn't escape--why he didn't glamour everyone and leave etc. Apparently, he's tired of violence and disguisted by the vampire's general avoidance of personal evolution. He pointed out Lorena, using her as an example of someone stuck in the past--she's "savage." I think that Godric was hoping to bring about peace between the vampires and the FotS. If Steve had agreed to let them go in peace, things would've been a lot different. In that instance, it is the vampires who are more evolved, because Steve was holding on to his hate. Godric is more in touch with his humanity than Steve (he let Hugo go). I think that serves as a great lesson in the show--just because a character is human, doesn't mean he/she has humanity.

As other people have pointed out, it seems that Eric's character is getting more in touch with his humanity. He's...softer in a lot of ways, but not soft. He seems to heed things Sookie says, even in the heat of the moment (ie when he grabbed the church guy by the thought). Perhaps she's helping him to get in touch with his humanity, too. Who knows. AS did a great job delivering his lines and using subtle cues. Did anyone else catch that amused grin he gave, after lecturing Jason at Godric's home? That cracked me up.

I'm curious to see how Bill handles the Lorena situation. Lorena seems very dangerous in that woman scorned way. While Eric did invite Lorena there to distract Bill, I'm wondering about his reasoning.

Maryanne's character is grating on my last nerve. I know that she's supposed to, but that souffle was just vile. You'd think that Tara might put two and two together at some point--but no.

I like that Lafayette's into Tarot cards. That was a neat addition. That last card was quite telling. As was the Lovers Card.

Jason was freakin' hilarious in this episode--from asking what Judas did to Sarah to telling Eric to kill Steve in the church.

> Why did Sara shoot Jason with a paintball gun if shereally intended to hurt him? That didn't make alot of sense. I love Jason and I'm glad he wasn't really hurt.

-I don't think she intended to shoot him at all I think she grabbed the gun because it was inside the golf cart. I'm pretty sure that was the same cart Steve and Jason took out to shoot the vamp posters in the woods. The paintball gun would have been in the car still.

> When Tara and Eggs were eating Maryann's snack, why didn't they notice that it looked like it was filled with blood? They didn't notice anything strange about that snack and they certainly didn't think it tasted strange. Why didn't they notice anything?

-My opinion on this is that Maryann has gotten very good at controlling the people in Bon Temps and she's even better at controlling Tara and Eggs because she spends so much one on one time with them. I say this because in the preview for next week's episode Maryann is in Merlottes and Arlene's eyes suddenly go black.

> Why doesn't Lafayette warn Tara more about Eggs?I think Lafayette is suspicious about him but Lafayette only voice his opinion once in the last episode), so why didn't he say something again? Lafayette knows something is up. Tara never asked Lafayette about his leg. I thought they were going to have that conversation.

-Well Lafayette has only met him the one time and he did try to warn her with that line about satan in a sunday hat. At the end of tonight's episode it was still that same night and the bar had just closed according to Tara so perhaps they would have had that chat if Eggs hadn't bursted in so freaked out. Lafayette and Lettie Mae do come to Tara's rescue next week(as per the episode summary) so that should be interesting.

> When Eric asked Godric why didn't he leave with him, Godric didn't respond. I wonder what he was doing?

-I thought he did respond by saying he was treated well there or something? I also think that whole speech he gave about vampire behavior being bad and essentially being the reason for the FotS was a good answer to Eric's question. Oh and he also says he could have killed them all but what would that have proved.

> Sam woke up in a car, how did he get there? What did I miss?

-My theory on this is that Sam was totally exhausted and fell asleep in his car after running(or flying) around all night trying to avoid Maryann.

True Blood is decadent, guilt-free popcorn that challenges your expectations and leaves you hungry for more. But I think the magic ingredient here is the cast; the performances. Enough has been said about the men (except Stephen Moyer, who is consistently thrilling to watch work), so I'd like to say a few things about the women:

Anna Paquin's Sookie is breathtaking; a force of Goodness and decency in a savage world. The chemistry between she and ALL the characters makes the show cohesive, but especially between she and Moyer. You can feel the love between the actors, but the way they've channeled it through their characters is among the sexiest, most affecting love stories I've seen. I loved Sookie standing her ground with Lorena. She was so brave and fierce! Knowing what the future holds for those two made their confrontation so much richer. I love that her humanity just rises up regardless of the threat. The show would be horrible without Sookie's bright light in the dark.

Speaking of Lorena, Mariana Klaveno was delicious: menacing, sexy, wounded, and strangely sympathetic. At first, watching her crumble at the hands of Godric made me cheer...until she broke my heart. Can't wait to see more of her.

Deborah Ann Woll is such a promising young actress. She's already holds her own against Moyer and Paquin. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop between she and Hoyt, but I thought that was such a great twist. And she absolutely sold it. Love her.

Michelle Freakin' Forbes! Wow. That cooking scene was so masterful; the tune she was humming was even more disturbing that her knife cutting through the tough heart. Someone was worried she'd be sticking around next season. If only! Whatever happens to her, I just hope she survives in the True Blood universe so she can resurface somewhere down the road. Rene Lenier hasn't got shit on Maryann. Frankly, she puts all the monsters and madmen in horror movies to shame because of her complexity and allure.

Lastly, Rutina Wesley is The Shit! I've always liked Tara, but after I saw her dance a few episodes back she started giving Sookie some real competition for my affection. The way she moves her body is Art! She's a fantastic actress too, and watching Tara slowly seduced by Maryann's hedonistic maenad is painful. God, that "hunter souffle" scene was absolutely horrifying; to see Tara all blood-drunk then violent. The way they slurped that shit up made me sick, which is a very good thing; so effective. Loved the blood leaking through the top as Maryann cut into it too. And those bitch-slaps exchanged between Tara and Eggs were some of the best blocked I've ever scene. Ouch! I practically grabbed my face when Eggs let Tara have it. I can't wait 'til Sookie gets back to Bom Temp to set things right.

P.S. You can never have enough Lafayette. I don't know if there's a character on TV that gives me such pure, unadulterated glee to watch. Besides Joan Holloway of course.

Faceless fall from this life and all,
If you can't see the stars
You've probably gone too far
Like the voice that cried
On the lonesome tide
Like the wave was
The only love it ever saw

"What's this dying for?"
Asks the Stork that soars
With the Owl high above
Canyon's mighty walls.
Owl said "Death's a door
That love walks through
In and out, in and out
Back and forth, back and forth."

Welcome to the forum Thullraven! :)

Here's just a couple of things to think about.

Why did Sara shoot Jason with a paintball gun if she really intended to hurt him? That didn't make alot of sense. I love Jason and I'm glad he wasn't really hurt.

When Tara and Eggs were eating Maryann's snack, why didn't they notice that it looked like it was filled with blood? They didn't notice anything strange about that snack and they certainly didn't think it tasted strange.
Why didn't they notice anything?

Why doesn't Lafayette warn Tara more about Eggs?
I think Lafayette is suspicious about him but Lafayette only voice his opinion once 9in the last episode), so why didn't he say something again? Lafayette knows something is up.
Tara never asked Lafayette about his leg. I thought they were going to have that conversation.

When Eric asked Godric why didn't he leave with him, Godric didn't respond. I wonder what he was doing?

Poor Sam. He must have been set up by Maryann. I'm sure she's the one who tipped off the police. I wonder when Daphne's body was planted in that fridge?

Sam woke up in a car, how did he get there? What did I miss?

Any more thoughts on this episode anyone?

I really enjoyed this episode, as all the others. I feel for Jessica, but her little problem can be worked around by the right man and a little patience. I'd love to help her out! We've seen all manner of beings in this series so far. Wonder if my kind will make an appearance. Didn't read the books, so I don't know.

For those who said that there were holes in this episode, such as how Luke found Godric's house.

Everyone and his brother seems to know where Godric lives -- even Lorena found it. Maybe there IS a neon sign

It was a great episode. I wish Bill would have told Sookie that Eric brought Lorena to keep him from helping her and that was why he wasn't there when she needed him it would have served him(Eric) right for being so underhanded. Godric's charater was pretty good nothing like he was in the books. Lots of humor. Thought everyone was great. Jason did good loved the hug he gave Bill.

I'm just annoyed because I don't think Maryann is going away quietly. And I dare say, she may be around until season 3. Ugh, NOOOOOO. I love Sam but would almost give him to her to make her GOOO AWAYYYY. And take your little dog, Eggs too. Geez talk about beating a dead friggin horse. I'm glad the writers mostly stayed with the Bill, Eric, Sookie storyline this week.

Good episode, I was screaming at the tv. Especially when Andy was explaining what happened. Sam was just sitting there. I was like SAY SOMETHING!!!!

I have always enjoyed TrueBlood--however, this episode has proven to me that there is great potential in the long-term for this series. I applaud the writers and HBO for creating such an excellent episode!! Keep it up!
