This is th first series where I can say that all the characters are so rich entertaining and captivating I could not possibly pick a favorite. I love them all!
I am Bill girl of course however.
I really liked Rene too... well before he turned out to be a murderous psychopath and was killed. Adore Lafayette so I can't wait till next season to see if it was him who got murdered, really hope not.

I have been thinking about this question for a while now and no matter how hard I try, I just can?t pick a "favorite" character. So, I guess my answer is "all of them."
I have favorite scenes, moments, episodes, sayings, and even fantasize about a certain 1000 year old Viking Vampire but I can?t actually pick a favorite character.
I love all the characters for different reasons. Each one brings their own very special something to the show and is just as exceptional as the other. Without one, the other or others wouldn't be as perfect or as desired as they are.

My favorite characters are Bill And Lafeyette . I was mesmerished by Bill the moment he walked into Merlotte Bar . He has captured my attention during the entire season . That really shows the brillant job SM does bringing out the character he portrays . AB made a excellent choice casting him in this role . He's the perfect gentleman and is sexy as can be . I love the way he expresses himself with his eyes without saying a word . Layefette brings the spice and humor to this fantastic show . He lightens up the show and makes me laugh . I hope he's not dead .I also hope to see more of SM in season 2 .

My fav would have to be Bill and Sookie!They are totally great together.I also like Lafeyette. Oh and Eric,If I had to choose it would be Bill and Eric,they are totally HOT!This is an awesome series,I cannot wait til the new series! I'm going to the book store to buy the books!

i think that stephen moyer plays bill. the casting was right on with that. i had never seen him before but you can't take your eyes off of him even when he is not doing anything in the scene. he is just beautiful. he just seemed to come out of nowhere but is really commanding in his performance and never over the top which i am sure would be quite easy to do in playing a vampire! i didn't care much for the vampires that were in burning house that earlier had been at the Merlotte's. sookie were right when she mentioned to bill that he was nothing like them. that they were evil. it is so neat that as he calls it retains some of his humanity by living alone not among other vampires. i guess that is when they act differently.

my favorite chacters would have to be sookie and bill. i can't pick between the two of them because they are what makes the show for me. it is a great show anyway but i am sure most would agree that we tune in to see what happens between them. bill is so handsome and instense and seems more thought out as a vampire than just stereotypes of vampires i have seen in the past also polite. i love where he is very protective of sookie. sookie is great as well because she truly does seem like a girl that i can identify with as far as being curious about bill when they first met than afraid because everything so different than really in love with him and stands up for him in her own way. just emotions going on between the two of them some of the side characters are not as interesting to me but i understand how you would need sam,tara, and jason, and lafeyette to have everything connected on the show.

My favorite character is Eric. In the books because there seems to be much more to him than the ruthless and jaded exterior he shows and on the show because so far we've only been teased and have only been allowed "glimpses" of him. Hopefully next season we'll get to see him more and it should be interesting to see his character develop.
In a close tie, it would have to be Sam. He's warm, loving and protective of Sookie. Also I guess it's the romantic in me wanting to cheer for the underdog.
Btw... sorry about the newbie question.... just like this thread asks who are favorite characters are, is there another one that discusses what actors fans might want to see in future roles in TB?

Runa, I totally agree with your "Least favorite characters" of Letty Mae and why so much time was wasted on her when we could have been watching VAMPIRES! That is why I am watching "TRUE BLOOD" and not "True Exorcism" or "True Drunk" or "True Harpy"!  TB is the one about vampires and a mind reading waitress who falls in love with one at the risk of losing her life.... many times!
But the vampire for me it is Bill Compton/ Stephen Moyer.... that man commands to be watched. His strength, grace, wit, passion and gentleness keep my eyes on him at all times no matter who else is in the room with him.
Please next season we need more vampires, Bill, Eric, Pam & I really loved the "trio"(so sorry they had to go!) and less drugs, drunks, opossum drownings, exorcisms and one note harpies. More vampire relationships and sex. Less Jason relationships and sex.
Ryan/Jason is a good actor as is Lafayette, Tara, Terry Bellefleur and Sam. Just not wild about the direction of the Jason and Tara characters and all of the precious minutes out of the 50 minute episodes spent on those two story lines.
Love Terry and Lafayette! Both actors have created great characters.
Also agree with your Sookie assessment. Her character is inconsistent and bordering on annoying at times. Please don't destroy her with the writing. She is the central character and needs to stay like Runa said in her post "sharp, sassy and resilient".

Bill is my favorite character. He and my husband could be twins--well, except for the fangs. They are both Southern gentlemen with ties to the War Between the States. They are honorable, courageous, full of integrity, protective, similar in appearance right down to height, brown hair, and incredible eyes. They were both born in April; and they both make me weak in the knees.

I have to agree about Terry. His delivery is priceless, and that hesitation, then turn and walk away has been the funniest part of any scene he is in. He really conveys that he is listening, unlike some of the other characters who seem caught up in their own drama. When he said 'there are lots of dead people I wish were still here, too', he won me over and after he did his 'exit scene right' after telling Arlene her hair was a pretty as a bomb explosion at sunset . . . pretty, I knew I'd be looking for that extra "something" he adds to any scene from now on.

I'd have to say Lafayette. Damn, he makes me laugh. Now, although he does his thing and wear those shiny gold pants every now and then, the moments when he transitions into straight thug mode are priceless.
