Chiming in a little late here...
I don't know about AB's world, but ITB, vampires are very nearly comatose during daylight hours. The older they are the stronger they are in this area too, so the one's like Erik can be woken (waked? woke up? Whatever...), but wouldn't wake by themselves; & could only stager around with help after being roused. This happens in a couple of the later books. But like I said, it looks like AB may be reinterpreting Charlaine Harris' world a little.
