So, what irritates you about this show?

I'd like to start out by saying I'm not a tr0ll and this isn't a hate thread. Like most of you I sit around all week waiting for Sunday just so that I can watch, but there is just something about this show that doesn't have me salivating or re-watching every chance I get on my TiVo like ROME did.

Maybe you guys can help me figure out why?

1) Some of the acting is horrendous, a bit dry I think at some moments too.
2)Tara is just too stereotypical of a black girl. As a "sistah" from southern california I tire of these characters, and some of the stuff that comes out of her mouth is just aggravating. While the other stuff is just pure magic because sometimes she can be right on key...
3)I don't know why the grandmother annoys me, she seems...special in some way, haha.

But there are about 30 reasons why I love the show and I can't wait to watch for more. :P

So anyone else irked by anything on the show?

I have to admit I was a little nervous about Harris' books becoming a show but I am totally in love with it now. there are some differences because the books are completely narrated by sookie the show has to find a way to build on the other characters, it can be a little awkward at times but I'm confident that as the show progresses the characters will grow and the actors will get a better feel for their roles.

BTW the southern vampire books are awesome and highly addictive one of my favorite series

Liviatasia,

I told my hubs that I thought the series was actually *better* than the books! That is the first time I have ever said that in my life! I have had a couple that I thought were as good as, though perhaps not a 100% translation (you mentioned LOTR and I thought it was equal to the books, at least as far as my enjoyment). There is another movie, "Something Wicked This Way Comes" which is adapted from a Ray Bradbury book that I think is a perfect translation but not BETTER. But for me, at least 4 episodes in, "True Blood" is better than the books! Not that I am not loving the books too... but, in the words of Tara, "If I had to choose..." the show wins.

Is it even possible to make great books into great movies?

There are always complaints that movies are never as good as the books. From Lord of the Rings to any other number of books.

There are a few things that irritate me (though I *do* love love love the show)...

I was irritated by Sookie being bad-a$$ enough to take care of the Rattray's but then stutter and act semi-terrified when Bill asked her "What are you?" I didn't think that was the right way to play it. The, "Well, I'm... S-S-Sookie Stackhouse, and I'm a waitress" (gulp!) was a litle too much. I wanted her to be as self-assured there as she had been leading up to that moment.

Sometimes the accents get me, but there are some very good and authentic ones too and the worse ones are improving (Sookie)

This is my biggest irritation--Sam calling Sookie "Chere." I hate that! He's NOT A CAJUN!! Southerners, even in Louisiana, don't say Chere unless they are from South Louisiana and even then, typically not unless they are cajun! It would be MUCH more authentic for Sam to call her "Sugar" or "Honey." Rene can say "chere" all he wants...

But I agree with a PP who said there was lots more irritation with the books. I do really enjoy the books, they are like literary crack, but many times while reading, I do stop and say, "I wouldn't have written it that way" or "That doesn't seam plausible or authentic."

I hope we get to see more depth from the characters in the coming shows too. I could do without the graphic sex scenes as they are really over the top but I still love the show.

Okay, I'm not as blatant and try to be to balanced in my judgement of the show, but I pretty much agree with you. The show moves way to slow, and where's the beef? so to speak.
It seems the meat of the books is missing and it very disappointing.
However, (there I go again) I don't know anything about creating a series or converting a book into one. I am hoping that, once the characters are fleshed out, the meaty stories will unfold.
I felt the same about Eric, but by the end of ep4, I think he may just work out. Sam doesn't seem to have the same depth or presence on the screen as on the pages. He was one of my faves., Pam is another. I hope that they get her right!

I'll give the show season one, but if the best of the books is lost, I won't bother with season two. I will likely cancel the HBO too. (more money for gas, don'tchaknow?)

It's a good thread. Jodevin had to be replying to a post you made elsewhere, I would think.

I am not crazy about the opening montage but I understand it, I think. Way mad about the song though. Downloaded it already.

I adore the books, therefore I have lots of issues with the show. However, it is a show and NOT the books, I understand it will be different.
(believe me I could post an hour on the differences and why I don't like them. However, there are some good differences too.)

I rather think the casting is very, very good, even when not spot on.

I think people who think the acting and dialog are not good may not have read the books. The dialog is not overly complicated, in the books, and a lot of the dialog (Sookie and whomever) is verbatim.
However, it is one of the things that make the books a very quick, enjoyable read, for the less than voracious reader.

I got HBO for the series and I expected heated sex scenes and the foul language. I just did not expect the entire show to revolve around Jason and his eggplant, or so it seems.

At least it seems that the show is finally getting into more of the story and the other elements.

Unfortunately the folks that are watching the show, where I work, have not read the books. One guy thinks the show is literally a sex comedy and only watches it for the nudity and sex. I am dead serious.
One person seems to be enjoying it, and the others are just appalled by the content, mostly the violent and graphic sex. These are not prudes, mind you, the just think it is gratuitous and unnecessary. After episode 3, two folks asked me what the show is supposed to be about. The said they found no real solid story line at all.
I think that this will change though.

For anyone that is interested the official wiki site has a series vs. the book section that is quite good. They only review the shows that have aired. And while they do not analyze every scene, they keep the info short and to the point giving a pretty good overview of the difference in a given scene.

Mcmaniz:
I couldn't agree with you more! Each week the epis are getting shorter and shorter...I'm surprised I haven't ruined my DVR with how many times I watch them over and over again. Of course I usually fast forward to the Bill/Sookie scenes.

BTW...I love the way Bill says SOOkie. Love that vamp!

I love the show, but compaired to the books it moves so slow. I could read a book in one or two days if I was really into it and being forced to wait one week for each episode is killing me!

I want to start by saying I absloutley love this show I love the books! But there are cerain things about the show are really annoying.

First I know I am going to sound like a complete bitch and believe me its not my intention at all. But in the books sookie is desrcibed as curvy and plain and in the show she is extremly thin and homely. I love anna paquin but I dont feel her look is right for the part. Other then that she does a great job with the acting and everyother part of sookie's charater.

Rutin Wesley (tara) is soo freaking cute I dont even mind that in the book tara was white. I have to say I think this relativley new actress is doing a great job but the charater they turned her into is sorta annoying, like she has an abusive mother as opposed to in the books she was a successful buisness owner and it really annoyes me that they make tara in the show seem anal and unsuccessful by losing her job all the time they should have kept her successful not a bartender......If they follow the books what inevitably happens to her iisnt as startling if she has such a hard backround and inadequate character. But on the other hand I love her and how she is so involved!

I dont know very little about this show annoys me the changes they made from the book are either s minor its not that important or its a little better then in the book. I only hope it gets better.....

picking up on what someone said about Sookie's personality, did anyone think it was extremely stupid/foolish of her to get all riled up with that vampire because of what she said about her virginity? I mean it would be one thing if she gave her a dirty look but to say something along the lines of "none of you fucking business you stupid bitch" to a vampire that can snap her neck...I mean come on. She doesn't know for sure whether or not Bill can defend her, so it just seemed I dunno...dumb to me. XD

Lets see....

Tara's wardrobe irrataes me.

Jasons tiny head bugs me more that irratates me. And yes, i know he has a great body but that tiny little head freaks me out a little.

A few of the accents irratate but as bad as many of us southerners would like to admit, some are spot on.

Im irratated that the waitress whos name escapes me is dead because I really wanted to see more of her,I like brunettes :)

Guess thats about it for now

Yes. It's kind of an an odd combination, with the violence and graphic sex scenes by a cast of cartoonish characters.

Anna Paquin's mugging is off the scale and her Sookie personality is irritating at times, but hopefully we'll see some growth there.

liviatasia - I couldn't agree more on the opening credits.

Great topic GetAgrippa . . .

I could add a few other things, but honestly, I don't want to derail what this topic has become.
