I love it, but does anyone else from La see the problems with this show???

I live in Crowley, Louisiana. Its about as deep South as you can get. GUESS WHAT?? No one talks the way they do on this show. Dont get me wrong, I like the show, it makes me laugh, especially all the stupid names. Lafayette is a town about 10 minutes from where I live. No one would name their child Lafayette. And we say it La-fee-yet if anyone is interested. People around here are used to others thinking that we talk like morons and have alligators in our back yards...its okay. Oh and one more thing that really bothered me about the last episode, when Lafayette says "boudin sausage". We say boudin..not boudin sausage. If you asked for boudin sausage at a store, youd get a stupid look, like, do you want boudin or sausage??? Oh wait one more thing!!! I love the way the characters are always talking about going back and forth to Monroe and Shreveport and Baton Rouge. Monroe and Shreveport are hours apart. Its not like someone in Monroe says "Hey let me drive to Shreveport for absolutely nothing, or the other way around. Baton Rouge is much farther South than the other two towns and where do the characters live?? Boun Temps??? WTF?? ALright dont hate me, like I said I like the show!! I watch every episode, I am just curious to know what others from around here think of it......

That's what she said! I knew the caption ('quit flirting with me...') made no sense, but I didn't understand what she said either, so I just sorta ignored the whole conversation.

And, I had read somewhere about 'Rene' being the only one on the show who hired someone to help him with the accent & that he did it with his own money. If you can believe the comments in the two threads about accents (one is 'we don't talk like that' or something similar), he didn't get it right. Of course, he sounds just fine to my CA influenced by OK parents ears.

That's where I went hang gliding, I think, where the big sand dune is.

And Nag's Head. Another one I like is farther north - Duck. That stretch of beach used to be a pilot test bombing site many years ago. When they would do a test run they would temporarily close the road and I guess the locals would duck.

Back on track about accents. I had lived with my grandparents in Washington DC when I was in 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade. When I came back to live with my family in Huston Texas the first thing I noticed was how slow and drawn out my brothers and sisters talked. At school I got accused of being a damned yankee, having a 'Boston Accent' and talking too fast.

2 and a half years later we moved to Lincoln Ne. There I got kidded in school about having a southern accent and talking too slow. The thing was I didn't notice my accent had changed. I thought I was talking the same.

That was one thing that really bothered me about Anna. In the first few episodes sometimes she would talk much too fast for someone who lived all her life in the South. I especially noticed it when she was at the "tornado" site.

About the way locals pronounce town names:

I live in Tallahassee and here are few from around this area ( North Fl and South Ga )

Havana Fl - that's HAY-van-a
Cairo Ga - that's KAY-ro
Albany Ga - that's al-BAN-nee

But the funniest I ever heard was of a town in NC on the outer banks:

Waves NC - wa-VES ( wa, as wa from waffles. Sounded like some Mexican town .)

I know of a better name of a town in the Outer Banks. Ever heard of Kill Devil Hills? Awesome place![

Something you won't know unless you watch the show with your closed caption option turned on: For the first three episodes, everytime anyone mentioned 'Bon Temps', the closed caption changed it to 'Benton', which is somewhat close to how it sounds... I guess someone on the show finally noticed the error because from the fourth episode on it has been correct.

Did you know that the actor that plays Rene hired his own accent coach?

Did you notice that in the bar after Dawn was killed, when Sookie said "Hoyt Fortenberry" the closed caption said "Quit flirting with me Berry"? Or maybe your closed caption is better than mine.

Thank God it does not take place in Boston!

I have yet to hear a Boston accent done right, so I can relate to how you all feel!

Well Frenchy99, not sure about where you grew up, but Rene sounds just like the people I was living around! Very interesting how we all think differently...like I said, I stand by what I said earlier, and "with authority" Rene is goooood!

I do agree to some extent, but honesly I don't let it bother me anymore. I'm born and raised in Metairie (right outside New Orleans) and this whole area has been butchered to no end by TV and movies. I try and look at all the things they got right instead of dwelling on all the wrong stuff.

I will share an example that literally made me cringe, Not from TrueBlood though. It was from "Stay Alive", a bad horror movie from a few years ago. It takes place in New Orleans. In one scene, a character's car breaks down and he's parked on the side of the road. He calls his friend for a ride or something and says he's "On River Road, near Mr. Binky's". Don't get me wrong, the Mr. Binky's reference was funny (it's an "adult" store) but that sentence is so geographically wrong I was disgusted.....lol. Also, if he was on River Road, why was he driving on a road that was lined with trees on both sides like Oak Alley Plantation? (River Road runs along the Mississippi River and is nothing but a levee on one side.)

Well I'm originally from Napoleonville, lived in Mansura in North La and of pure French Acadian extraction and I can tell you with authority that Rene's accent is so bad I wanted to scream. He never once uses any Cajun slang, and his constant 'you, me' additions to the end of his sentences is total bull. I don't know anyone who talked like that.

Not one person on the show has a Cajun accent, for it being in North La, very hard to pull one off actually, unless you're around somene who talks with an accent for weeks at a time. When I leave La, I totally forget to talk that way, but once I meet up with family again, it takes about 2 hours for me to fall back into the accent.
As for the 'gator in your backyard' stuff, I had gators living in the big ditch behind our barn once. Ate 2 cats.
But I do agree with this 'Shreveport to Monroe to Baton Rouge' thing, they're so far apart that it's not time-efficient to run to Monroe or Shreveport to do anything, and you never see them using Hwy 1, or Interstate 20.

I lived in Church Point, LA (which is about 20-30 mins from Crowley, LA) for 10 years, and my father is a native of that town, and he still lives there. I went to school in LA. I have to disagree w/the person that said Rene's accent is AWFUL.. HUH? Rene's accent is about the most genuine Cajun accent in that entire show. He's so good, in fact, that I had to look up his bio to see if he was actually a local! The rest of them sound like they are from Tennessee (which is where I live now). Keep in mind though, up near Shreveport, the Cajun accent can get lost, and it turns into more of a Southern twang...and in the books, Charlaine writes that Bon Temps is not too far from Shreveport. So when I watch it, I keep all this in mind. In addition, it's TV! Not everything will be kept true to form. I gotta admit though-the way the pronounce Lafayette drives me crazy! I also can't stand the way Bill says "Sookie"...he like overdoes it or something. But love the show!
