All through season one I had issues that I wanted the essence of the storyline and characters to mirror the books, at least . . . and I had trouble watching things change, particularly in the Eric/Sookie relationship. After 7 months of waiting for the new show, I have accepted that there are more changes than consistencies on the show - books are the books and the show is the show . . . but I can separate the two and enjoy both for what they are without any more preconceived notions. Although I have to say, Elizabeth and Mr. Collins? If you are talking with Kiera Knightly and Tom Hollander, I could probably get some amusement out of them, there were terrific in that version . . . but dealing with that elemental change in that story would really be hard to take . . . well . . . I love the Sookie books, but let's face it, CH is no JA . . I can stomach these changes a little better . . . -- "If you knew my story word for word, had all of my history, would you go along with someone like me?" " . . . I would be your bad-ass vampire." He seems to be a bit "sappy" in the series compared to the book. I agree that he is "edgier" in the books. I think his character is sexier in the books than in the series. I think that Eric's character is definitely more sexy in the books than in the series as well, especially when you start getting into the more recent books. I was a bit confused with the Tara character because she was not in the early stories other than as a passing mention of someone that Sookie knew from high school. They never wrote her in as Sookie's best friend. With regard to the maenad, that was something that I was not expecting (at least until later on in the series) because it did not get written until later on in the stories. I did not think that they would develop her into a regular character but I think that it is definitely interesting for the story line, especially with regard to Sam's involvement. I am curious to see how much AB will stick to the book with regard to how they rid themselves of MaryAnn and the original story. This too will remain to be seen. Personally, I cannot wait to see what is going to happen with this series and with CH's books on the subject. I think that she is a wonderful writer and hope that she brings us many more fantastic books for this series to watch and enjoy. Thanks for not ripping my head off for commenting on the topic. There are a lot of fans who are extremely close minded when it comes to this topic and when anyone tries to ask a question, they become extremely guardeed and irate. I just meant that the books are so well written that they draw the reader in and make you feel as if you are right there in BT with the actual characters. It is very hard to find a writer of such caliber and when one does, it is difficult to see that writer's work having the heck edited out of it just for the viewers but I do realize that if it were not for the editors and screenwriters, the storyline would be moving extremely slowly and there probably would not be much of a fan base because of the slowness of the plot. It is a double-edged sword. I do respect AB and his team of writers. I guess I am just a person who enjoys reading and being drawn into the characters in that manner. It is the same for me with the deleted scenes from the Blu-Ray disks. I am sick to death of hearing about these scenes. It is like all the fans fixate on these deleted scenes rather than the actual storyline/plot that is happening and discuss these deleted "teasers" because they feel that they are more interesting. There are many fans who feel that these scenes were deleted for a reason whether it was because the editors felt that they were not pertinent to the storyline, were good enough for actual viewing and ended up on the cutting room floor, etc. However, the fans seem to want to watch these scenes more than the actual episode. Go figure!!!! It was very nice discussing this topic with you and I hope that we discuss other topics in the future. Take care. -- KTS, MD

I love the series! I have been reading the books, only on number 4... and I love the surprises the show offers. Like this past episode? Two shockers! The past two episodes my jaw has just dropped as the credits came up (Bill at Jessica's family house and Daphne with the scratches). Alan Ball is brilliant; Six Feet Under is my favorite show ever. So, in my opinion, he can rework the books to his liking to make this fabulous show. A 12 episode, 50 minute format is totally different than a book. I heard him say in an interview, that he does need to build more as the books are from Sookie's perspective entirely and if she's not there, they don't exist.. I feel that I know more about Harris's vampire myths and characters' personalities because of reading the books; but this show will stand the test of time as a classic.

Karen- I'm not a book purist, but I understand how you feel; I didn't care for Bill being the one to kill Longshadow; however, I did like the inclusion of Tara in the first year; I do like the Jessica character, and I liked Eddie last year. I like that Mary Ann/the Maenad has been developed more than in the books and that Jason is off with the FotS people. Terry's a favorite too, and I like that he was changed to a Gulf War vet. What I don't like is when the main characters aren't true to the book representation. For example, I prefer book Bill to TB Bill and not because of the suitor thing. I find book Bill edgier, and I like that he screws up his relationship with Sookie and is not perfect. Occasionally TB Bill comes off like Angel from Buffy particularly when he says lines like "I will atone" and "you brought me back to my humanity." I wince when the dialog gets sappy. Also the argument that there would be no surpises if the books were adapted faithfully is only true for the people who read the books and loved them and want them to be similar; everyone else would still be surprised. I posted this on another forum, but it's the equivalent of adapting Pride and Prejudice and settling Elizabeth with Mr. Collins and telling the fans of THAT book it was done to surprise them. It wouldn't be a very satisfying surprise.

Hi: I am new to this board, but I completely agree with you on this one. I have read all the books and believe that AB needs to stick with the story line. There are so many characters that are extremely interesting in the books that are never even mentioned in the series. I do not know why he feels the need to "create" additional characters and/or change the plot lines around. Some of the characters are so endearing to the books and mandatory to the stories. I just do not understand it. Does he do it for himself? Does he do it for the viewers? I guess we will never know. -- KTS, MD

and I wish ab had left the blood > exchange with eric not bill.....I think it would have > put a better spin on the characters' reactions..... > I may not be remembering LDID right, but I don't remember Eric giving Sookie blood after the Maenad attack. I thought she got transfused with True Blood and a human donor. I thought it wasn't until the bullet sucking that he actually gets his blood into her. I think I prefered the book version of the healing where Bill, Pam, Eric, and Chow pass her around to draw out her blood and the poison, and Bill's ticked off by it. I think the show could have had a lot of fun with Bill's reactions particularly if Eric and Pam were true to form while they fed off of her. In the book, I also liked that Sookie thanked all the vampires for saving her and not just Bill. -- Edited by MiaV1 at 07/07/2009 1:40 AM PDT
