What's it like so far?

I love the books but live in the UK so we don't have the series on TV yet (hopefully we will do soon).

What do fans of the books think of the series so far? I really hope it's great but there are some really mixed messages on these boards.

I've read all the books up to ATD. There are some things about the books I really do not like, but as a whole I like them a lot. I'm really enjoying the show, from what I've seen the changes that have been made have been good ones.

I am loving it so far. I think Alan Ball is doing an awesome job on this series. You are always going to find books turned into a movie or series that don't go as the books do but I think that gives it some surprise so you don't know everything.

Welcome to the board and I hope you enjoy your visits with us!

I am a huge fan of the books and love the show. Given, it is not EXACTLY like the books but excellent in it's own way. The casting is near perfect. I think if you don't over analyze it or expect it to be just like the books you will really enjoy it. The fact that the show has so many people (lovers & haters) riled up about it means that it is definitely worth a watch.

I'm on my 2nd book of the series and let me tell you even though the director hasn't gone word for word form the books this show is G-R-E-A-T!!! I agree the cast they chose is the best possible one they could have picked. Bill, as you probley already know, is the cat meow to us female veiwers. Sookie I probley guess all the male viewers are already in love with. Tara has the attitude of a total B----, but you lie her anyway I think she is the spice in the show. Sam is the shy country boy in love with Sookie and want teel her that or his secret. Jason is totally a male, he's had his hands on most of the bumper in this town. La'Fettet(I think I spelled it right) is the humor. Even Sookie's grandmother, and the police chief are great.
You are really missing the best show that's come on in a long time.

I can report as a big fan of the books that I am already in love with the series. I think the casting is great and I absolutely adore Bill far more than the Bill of the books. Where in the books Bill comes across as dour and negative our TV Bill exudes a sexy smoldering fire--very irresistible!!

I've noticed that nearly all of the negative messages regarding the show seem to stem from fans of the book.

Any avid reader or fan of a particular book series will tell you that film, tv (and whatever category HBO is...which is neither TV nor movie) ruins their favorite things.

Like Lord of the Rings... other than critiques of the length, the most vocerifous haters were LOTR fan boys/girls.

Same thing here i think...

Personally I'm an avid reader and can take such things like adaptations with a grain of salt. Enjoy it for what it is and dont compare impossible mediums.

Hope that makes sense...

And on a slightly unrelated note, when I found out HBO had the rights to the "Song of Ice & Fire" fantasy series by George RR Martin, I was super-duper psyched. Glad they always pick up the good material!

Pompalompa,

If you want a sort of preview of what "True Blood" will be like, check out the old Blood Copy website. It's supposed to be an online magazine documenting the emergence of vampires into the public eye. To start from the begining and get the full flavor of the experience, begin here, then click on the "Newer Entries" link on the bottom, right side of each page:

http://bloodcopy.com/?paged=19

You can also watch trailers and clips of the show on YouTube.

offical HBO trailer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vd5E-pHzXGI

You can search on YouTube for more, but HBO will have YouTube remove unlicenced videos, so I'm not going to post links to them here.

Withay & Pampolompa:
You're both going to love "TrueBlood" it's getting
real good things are heating up~ on both the
Vampire sides & the Human sides:
On the Vampire side~ more Vampires are coming out
of the woodwork~last weekend we met two more
including the one who was doing Maudette~a girl
Vamp and a guy who looked English!

On the Human side:
jason has gotten back with one of his lady friends
and Bill came to see Sookie at her home!!
That was pretty interesting!

So tune on in on Sunday~tivo the football game or
anything else and watch True Blood instead!

Hell I'm even skippin' the Emmy's!!!!! LOL

I think it's like a lot of things; some people like it and some don't. It does not even seem to follow that readers of the books feel one way and "newbies" another. I think that there are two good signs. One, HBO has already renewed it for a 2nd season. Two, it seems to be fairly evenly split among people who hate it and people who love it. Now, if everyone hated it, that would be a bad sign!
