I am a newbie, done 35 plays , but am currently trying to get somewhere in film and tv, they made me a production assistant rather than actor when i am obviously an actor and have kind of been down... how does someone get somewhere when they live in BFE Ohio... and want to be in NY ... also is 40 too old to start? oh and I do want my SAG card...

My first job as an actor I was in the Poccino's in Maryland playing the part of a crab. They through chichen over the dock and I grabbed with my mouth. After 8 piece I was full so I quit the show. Oh yeah I had to use the bathroom aftewards. Ha Ha Ha Ha Thankyou Darryl Mast

This is the only business in the world in which there are both "union" and non-union people working. Maybe it is because that both SAG and AFTRA really aren't unions. I think it is absurd that a non-union actor should get half the pay as a SAG or AFTRA member for background work. The system in which you need 3 vouchers is also absurd, for far too many people get the vouchers by doing favors (sexual and otherwise) for members of the cast or crew, and not with acting talent. Can someone please explain to me how the industry gets away with this legally? I thought the law was equal pay for equal work.. Message was edited by oyvay at Mar 26, 2005 6:43 PM

For me, union membership has already opened doors for better roles, better agent representation and better pay. Of course, I can only speak for myself. I know several nonunion actors who are very happy working nonunion; however, they don't earn as much as their union counterparts and are not cast in speaking roles in mainstream television and films. To join or not to join is a question that only you can answer for yourself. Visit SAG's website (www.sag.org), for more information, and/or talk to a SAG rep, the next time you're on set. I joined SAG last November and registration, including the first six months' dues, was $1,440.00. I'm not complaining. For me, it was worth it. Break a leg! On January 17, 2005 CNN reported that this site is giving away Free Flat Screen TV's. All you have to do is join, complete an online offer, and refer friends to do the same. That's it! I've joined and I think you should as well. It's a completely legitimate offer, and this company has already given away $4 million in FREE stuff! Here is the link I got off CNN. To get your Flat Screen copy the URL below: www.FreeFlatScreens.com/?r=14071302

OY! One more job until I am a must join. And now I heard they raised it up to 2100 to join, so that means I would have to pretty much work for free just to pay off the bill. Jeeze.....

I didn't think that you could buy your way into SAG. I was "Taft Hartleyied" which means you can work your first job without paying the initial fee, (it's close to 1200). The problem with SAG as I see it is they're lame about getting you residuals. Also the health care plan isn't a good as it used to be, or so I hear

Welcome to the World of SAG. I will give it to them...when you are in they do have a decent health care plan....and you are taken more seriously when scouting for an agent. But yeah...for the five percent (someone correct me if I'm wrong...I think it is still the national stat) of us who are not in the "Tom Hanks" financial bracket of actors...the membership fee is pretty incredible. And would be almost impossible for SAG to do a 'Sliding Scale" for new actors or a "Solid Payment Plan" for SAG actors who do one gig...and are not landing gigs. I saved up for SAG. I work in theatre and get paid for teaching and theatre shows, and improv remotes. The irony. My Theater gigs paid for my Screen Actors Guild card. But overall. If you are shooting for this type of career (and being a Chicago Union Grown Girl)...it is nice to have your butt covered. When the SAG Commercial Actors went on strike a while back it was utter chaos. Non Union Actors doing commericals and then some named stars jumping union line. Total utter chaos. Thank god for people like Richard Dreyfuss. When they tried to merge with AFTRA (American Federation of Televison and Radio Artists) it was utter chaos. It is all we have. Call your local SAG office. Sit down and talk to them. -- Shaun Landry My Website Living vicariously through other people's good fortune since 1965

I looked into getting my SAG card, and realized that it would cost me $1000 that I don't have, or lines on a show that I can't get without the card. What's wrong here? Anyone else see a problem with this?
