When you think about the impact the show has made on you, what comes to mind? Was it simply the pinnacle of good dramatic television to you or was there some deeper meaning or connection with a storyline or character that touched you in some way? -- Tim HBO Forums Host

This is BY FAR the best series I have ever seen on TV. Some of the cast never acted before this. WOW!!!!

Nice heartfelt reply. VERY good stuff. I too, recall talking to acquaintances at work lately (indeed, regulary!) and absent-mindedly mentioning The Wire in converstation, forgetting for the moment that our insider knowledge isn't universal. Oops! Who ARE these people? Perhaps that says it all. We're a club, with an insight to something outsiders simply don't appreciate.

I laughed at Poot, Dukie broke my heart, and OMAR just captivated my mind. Avon slick and fast, Stringer intelligent and ruthless, the show just had me hooked from episode 1. I have never encountered as many television characters that forced me to look beyond the stereotype. A junkie with a good heart? A homosexual who's homosexuality never really crossed my mind?!! A ruthless killer that I admired for his intelligence and drive to do better? Never in my adult life has a television show, or movie franchise dug this deep into the person that I am. It angered me to the point that I cancelled HBO after Omar got done, LOL!!! Come on it's a tv show, why did I feel so betrayed?! This was crazy that what I felt was the ABSOLUTE punk ass, and incredulous way for this character to get killed evoked such feelings out of me, a reasonably intelligent professional! No other show can come close to what the Wire has done. I was pissed when I saw that BET had reruns of the old seasons because in my mind it was going to be watered down, and unauthentic. I would be out or visiting someone and I'd be like "Oh I need to get home to watch my show!" Cause I didn't want to wait for a re-run of the episode and would watch it on demand when there wasn't anything else on tv. I mean every person that I met who said they didn't watch the show made me stop and take notice. Like how could you not be watching The Wire?! I need to talk to you! I will miss the show, the characters, and the kinship with other Wire fiends. It has meant so much....

you guys are writing really good replies. all i have, is that it made me quit watching tv, except to turn it on to watch dvds. network tv (lost/heroes/desperate housewives) is so crummy to me now. i guess its like when my vegan friends eat meat... i think the last season could have been better (more of the newspaper angle), but oh well. -- i am very upset that Mr. Omar Little was not limping when he walked in the store!!! why did it happen?

Can't really sum it up adequately, and I doubt I'll ever try, but here goes anyway: The Wire meant that even Cable TV didn't have to be SHIT, like 99.9% of the crap out there. The Wire meant that the 2 hour movie format could be serialized into 12 hours intelligently, without sensationalism or pandering, and that intelligent people would actually watch it. The Wire meant that you could write an ongoing and successful series that engaged its audience's highest capacity for both critical reasoning and empathy, and which crossed long-neglected socio-economic barriers in doing so. In short, The Wire meant that white, mainstream America could at least minimally begin to support a TV series that exposed their still unexplored racial and socio-economic hypocrisy.

THE WIRE MEANT A LOT TO ME...................................................................................................UNTIL THEY WROTE THAT GARBAGE IN THE LAST SEASON. ONE WOULD THINK A WRITER WOULD TRY TO MAKE THE LAST SEASON GO OUT WITH A BANG, BUT THE LAST SEASON WAS TRASH. THE WHOLE TEMPLETON THING WAS FAR FROM INTERESTING, OMARS DEATH WAS SHALLOW AND FAR-FETCHED, AND EVEN THE HOMELESS MURDERS WERE FAR FROM GOOD TV.

The wire gave me an avenue to talk about my past. First an only show to truly capture the raw essence of life on the grimy streets..... All the other aspects of B-More were an added caviat to learn and grow from. -- PANDEMIC!!

There's no reason to rush and be settled by 9pm on the dot anymore, i don't even know what to do with that time

Not to be funny but The Wire to me meant that i would have something of value to watch every sunday night. I wouldn't have to watch the "idiot box" and actually say to myself why am i watchin this crap. Because i know that im watching history in the making, great acting, fantastic writing, and characters i can relate to. Now all i got to look forward to is....Flavor of Love repeats

It meant a lot to me because Baltimore is my city. It was show that I could relate to. Although other shows are entertaining, I've never had a show feel like this. If I open my front door and step out on our stoop, I see the rowhouses. It sounds exactly like 'The Wire" out there, down to the dogs barking in the alley. The inside scenes got me, too. The floor plans, the narrow staircases, the kitchens in the rear are all hallmarks of Baltimore's rowhouses and could have easily been filmed in my home. I can name someone in real life that reminds me of each character. This show feels very personal to me.

The Wire was the Mirror on Urban city life in my opinion, and i also agree with some earlier posts about it making you think about what's going on in your own city.... - The wire to me was not just show about drug dealers as many people seem to think, and often offend me with comments such as, "i don't want to see the other story lines, just the one's about the street" and i'm like well there's more to life than just the street. And i think it would be insulting (if not exploting) if the Wire would've just focused on that one area of society, as if we could not comprehend any other form of life.
