Season 5: Read Between the Lines

The fifth and final season of THE WIRE centers on the media's role in addressing - or failing to address - the fundamental political, economic and social realities depicted over the course of the series, while also resolving storylines of the numerous characters woven throughout the narrative arc of the show.

Don't miss the Season 5 Premiere January 6!

There's nothing stupid at all about The Wire. Everything has it's place and I'm insulted by people saying otherwise. Season five might be the weakest season, but that being said this is still the most powerful, intriguing show of all time. I think it's sad people hold bs like Friends in such high regard when shows like this air. Hopefully HBO will air other shows like this again (think about OZ, Deadwood and others). Where's the new programming? I really want to keep my subscription but while Entourage is good it's not worth $13 a month. Please let there be something thought provoking in store for us. Please, please, please, please........

FYI: Check out The Atlantic's new video
video roundtable on the legacy of "The Wire" at http://www.theatlantic.com/movies/wire.mhtml . It features Mark Bowden, Jeff Goldberg,
and Ross Douthat and goes into everything from David Simon?s obsession with
Ikea to Snoop?s dying words. Mark Bowden got his start at the Baltimore Sun,
so there?s a particular emphasis on David Simon?s hatred of that paper and
of the newspaper industry in general.

We?ve divided the discussion into four parts (each part is about 10 minutes)
and posted the whole series here:

Fresh Air with Terry Gross

Terry Gross's program, Fresh Air on NPR, from WHYY in Philadelphia, has had a number of guests recently from The Wire. They've included David Simon, Richard Price, and Michael K. Williams. The interesting thing was that none of them considered The Wire simply as a way to showcase their talents, but they all felt it was a statement and education aimed at American viewers who have no idea what's going on in the neighborhoods that people are afraid to drive through.

I've loved every season of The Wire and I'll miss it tremendously. I think that this season, more than the others, shows that even though people in vastly different professions, who live in seemingly mutually exclusive worlds, have lives that are shackled together by issues and actions in the most incredible ways. So many of the characters fight relentlessly to have at least some control over their environment and destiny, but are finding out that their efforts are laid waste by the unexpected and uncontrollable. Omar's murder was the most shocking, pertinent, and saddest example of that.

I fear a very cynical, if not outright depressing, ending to the series. I haven't cared to see reruns of other programs, but I hope that HBO can rerun some seasons of The Wire so that we can fill in with hindsight some of its more salient qualities.

True, you have to be forty something or better to enjoy the simple pleasure of reading the newspaper every day, I've been doing it my whole life but the younger generation doesn't even know what a newspaper is, they get it all on their hand held devices instantly.

See the finale NOW !!

In recognizing the overall loss of such a great show, I started seeking out any videos I could find about The Wire. I found a great one where David Simon talks about the affections he feels for Baltimore and how the city has influenced his work.

Randy and Cheese have the same last name because they are married under Maryland's liberal man-boy same sex marriage laws. Glad I could be of help with this novel question ever left unasked.

When he pulled out the map I also thought something was going to happen to him. I thought as soon as he made the connection and pulled his phone out to make the call he was going to get wacked.

I completely agree with what you're saying about the institutions and various mechanisms that are supposed to serve and/or protect us but are oftentimes so corrupt or self-serving that they undermine their own principles. I liked Omar though. A gay, robin-hood, who's tougher than the rest of them and often works alone? He's like the Clint Eastwood of the wild west. Really unique character and a great actor besides.

I agree-- thought that Leandor was going to be shot for those few seconds.. especially when the camera was showing the side view, with the open car window behind him.

no, the ME guy corrected the tags, putting omar's back on his body. the ME recognized omar and that's why he smiled. it was a sad scene though, as it just went to show that although omar was a hood legend for jooks, no one else really knew him or cared about him for anything else. see the scene with mcnulty's girlfriend telling him that no one was going to remember him for his police work, that only his family would care.
