If the moral is the more things change, the more they remain the same, then Dukie has to become a druggie and Michael has to become the new Omar. Society squandered its opportunity for change, so, while the faces change, the roles remain in place.

I watched the finale last night. I'm still hurt over dukie turning into a druggie. I'm glad Slim Charles got Cheese for Prop Joe! Mike turning into Omar was a nice ending too. I thought they would show more of the streets but overall it was still good. Just sad that it's ending!!!

I know Herc was told by Carver that the wire tap on Marlow was bad, but when did we see Herc tell that to Levy? More to the point, WHY would Herc rat on his friends who are trying to do good police work, to ingratiate himself with that shyster lawyer? It doesn't make any sense, unless Herc is just being a self-serving shithead, which is what I think it really comes down to.

And that expense account "BS" is Herc doing what Levy *told* him to do. Herc was buying beers with his buddies outta pocket, and then Levy told him to put the drinks on the expense account so that the firm pays for those drinks. Those drinks, after all, is how Herc is using his police friends to get info, and Levy figures *his* firm's account can cover those drinks if it leads to better lawyer'ing. (Probably write it off, too.)

Last ep, convo between Herc and Levy

Maixu,

Yes, Herc tips Levy off to the wire tap after he spoke to Carver during shift change...remember?

Why are you surprised? Herc didn't do it to fuck up the case...he did it to keep his employment with Levy. After that expense account BS, he had to prove himself.

About 58 minutes in to the final episode, Levy is leaving his meeting with Marlow, and Herc asks him, "How'd that go, boss?"

I can't quite make it out, but just after Levy calls Herc a gold mine, I *think* Levy says "YOU don't tip me to that bad wire tap I've got all kinds of trouble, but now ..."

Which just kills me. Did Herc tip Levy off to the (illegal) wire tap? I'm sure he know through Carver they were watching Marlow's phone, maybe even knew the tap was illegal, but why would he help his cop buddies get the number only let Levy in on that dirt which would give Marlow a pass? Herc is stupid, but he must have known spilling anything to Levy would only have given Marlow a get out of jail free card.

It drives me crazy. Herc dropped dirt on the Marlow wire tap, ignoring his cop buddies, all to get in deeper with that scumbag lawyer. Typical Herc, maybe, but a whole new low.

Also, any idea what Daniels says to Carver right after he says "guess I got kids I don't even know about"? I can't for the life of me figure out what Daniels says, but Carver responds "say it isn't so."

The end of The Wire is in keeping with its theme that we are consistently let down by our institutions, from schools, to the police, to newspapers, to government. I'm sure that many people were initially turned off by The Wire because it is real, and in reality it's often difficult to tell the good guys from the bad. I will miss The Wire and the interesting cast of characters, many of whom I grew to love. But I think the writers told the story they set out to tell and anything more would be superfluous. In the perfect world of crime drama TV, Carcetti would have blown the whole thing and lost his job in the bargain, but by covering his behind, everything remains the same and the US cities chug along with corrupt governments continuing the fail the people, and with weak, ineffectual people at the helm in government, in law enforcement, in education and in the media.

No, Randy has no training. He would have been a liability. Michael's partner is probably a fellow graduate of the Chris Partlow paramilitary training academy. (It looks like it might be the guy with the braids and black t-shirt laughing with Michael during the arrest when Officer Colicchio goes nuts attacking the teacher and has to be restrained in Episode 4.)

That's the greatest post in HBO Message Board history. If you would allow me to join in:

HBO sold TV-MA DVD's to kids. The world is a better place without them. Hey, this network was the biggest major violator, on television. I watched those cocksuckers operate with impunity for over 10 years, and now I got 'em. The shit's chess, it ain't checkers.

That didn't make any sense, but...it was fun anyway.

I think alot of you missed how much symbolism there was through out this series leading up to the finale. The most important character that was forgotten about in season 5 was D'Angelo. Why? Because of 2 monologues he had in season 1 and 2. The first season he had that speech with Bodie and Poot about how to play chess. That theme played throughout the entire series. In season 2 he had the monologue in jail in the library about man always being who they are. That played perfectly into Marlo's last scene. When Marlo smiled and tasted his own blood, he knew he would always be a gangster because it was in his blood. In other forums people are trying to assess a message to this last episode. The reality is that there really wasnt a message. The "chess pieces" were reset on the board with new faces taking the place of each player. Remember Herc's quote in season 1? "This isn't a war on drugs." "Why not?" "Wars end." This whole series has been the most perfect series of all time. The realism, the symbolism, the characters, everything was perfect. Thank you to The Wire staff for putting a perfect production for all of us to see. It saddens me that this show does not get the awards it deserves. All because of its content. But if sacrificing a few awards is what it took to bring this much realism into a series then so be it.
