Episode 54: 'Transitions' (WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILERS!!)

The police brass changes, McNulty and Freamon look for bodies, Prop Joe pays his last respects.

"Buyers market out there" - Templeton

---------------------------------------------------------------------

This episode was pretty slow overall. I think it was slow because there was very little street action going on.

Here are my thoughts:

1) The opening scene it so funny - kinda like Episode 51 where Bunk tells the murder suspect the copy machine was a lie detector. Basically the police see Kenard hide the re-up and bust the boys. When the police puts his hand in the bag to get the drugs out it turns out the bag has a bunch of dog shit in it. This throws Coliccio (spelling?) into a rage and he ends up being too physical with the teacher in the car who is trying to get by the scene,

2) Prop Joe makes Butchie's funeral arrangements and says he respects him,

3) Marlo meets with the Greeks and they allude that if Prop Joe was gone they would deal with Marlo,

4) Templeton interviews with the Washington Post but doesn't get the job,

5) It comes out that the information that Burrells has on Daniels has to do with some missing drug money from when Daniels was in the Eastern Division,

6) The guy shot in the leg last episode was not the same guy that protected Omar in jail last year,

7) Marlo is okay and satisfied that his money in the bank. Prop Joe takes him to his own attorney to give Marlo some advice on how to invest it. A funny exchange happens because Herc is in the attorney's office hanging out and Marlo asks him if the camera ever turned up from last season,

8) Omar was gonna kill Slim Charles but believes him when he says it was not Prop Joe that set up Butchie. So Omar spars Slim Charles' life and decides to go after Marlo's crew. He points our a lieutenant in Marlo's crew but I could not make him out. It may have been Michael,

9) Marlo and Chris and Snoop give Hungry Man to Cheese to kill because Hungry Man got mad at Cheese in the Co-Op meeting and embarassed him,

10) Beadie now distrusts McNulty and thinks he is back to his old ways,

11) Prop Joe was about to leave out of town to hide from Omar. But Cheese set him up and Marlo had Chris kill him in his own home.

Probably true - however, I feel - at least at this point - that Marlo falls victim to Omar, who will knock-off a few of his upper-managers, starting with the one that he targets during surveillence in the building. I can see the Marlo/Omar feud carrying on for a few episodes.

Well, I believe 1 thing IS for certain: Marlo aint gettin capped out no time soon- HBO AINT CRAZY. The show would almost certainly lose up to 30% of it's viewership on that note alone because Marlo and his story-arc are too compelling. Slim Charles is a G- but he's nowhere close to the same nut-case that Marlo is. The show could lose just about ANY OTHER character right now except for Marlo and it would still be a considerably interesting watch.

The next episode will feature a very dramatic shoot-out involving Omar and Marlo's crew- and someone WILL get dropped- but it WON'T be Marlo..

What I expect to see is Marlo having to finally re-consider his actual firepower in the streets while maintaining his dope-game stranglehold. But I do believe this: with all of his money, it's no question that the dude got a weapons arsenal fit for a military infantry division, and I don't think he will hesitate to let all of the cannons bust if faced with the option..

The scenes with Carver are great especially where he was called a "rat" by Collecio. In an earlier season, i think 2, it was revealed that Carver was Burrel's "new rat" just as Daniels used to be so I guess the writers are just throwing that back at us. That's why Carver says "Well Im a rat then"... I wonder what will come of it. Maybe he wont make rank... I also like how Carver tried to tell Collecio how to write the report for internal review just how Daniels did for Prez. the game remains the same.

So does Marlo plan to take > over and run the co-op? Seems like on one hand he'd have no real interest or use from that position.

I'm wondering about this issue as well. It doesn't seem like Marlo has any interest in managing the co-op, and would much prefer the territorial wars that will invariably develop with a lack of central unity. It doesn't appear that anyone can match his muscle, and with a direct line to the Greeks, the other factions will be forced to deal with Marlo, or seek their product elsewhere.

Good point. Butchie is one of Omar's few allies, and certainly his main source of advice. In my opinion, Omar becomes somewhat of a superhero as he makes his move on Marlo, who is clearly the evil character on the show.

So just watched it again and seems like i've got more questions the second time then originally. I assume that was the fat faced rick character at the co-op meeting talking about clearing a mil selling his property. Couldnt remember if hes been in any of the other eps before this. So does Marlo plan to take over and run the co-op? Seems like on one hand he'd have no real interest or use from that position however the Greeks may be pissed about taking a hit in business since Joe was copping for everyone and Marlo even with increased terriorty couldnt come close to the quantity being purchased from them.

Also I assume Omar is going back on his word to Bunk that there would be no more bodies on him. Well he lasted a year i guess but a man that prides himself with his code you'd think he mighta figured out a way to stay out of the game despite Butchies untimely death.

By the way, to anyone with information concerning details of episodes beyond the current on-demand schedule - please avoid contaminating this thread. It's not fair to viewers who choose to view the show week-to-week. Your consideration is greatly appreciated.

I remain perplexed by this whole "don't snitch" nonsense. 95% of all criminal targets snitch following arrest. Not snitching is the least followed "street rule", but yet so many misguided people view it as a maxim. It's amazing how the current generation expanded "not snitching" on drug partners to damn near ever crime that occurs on the street. In the end, it's just another foolish concept suppressing weak minds. I've seen the biggest so called thugs snitch in a heartbeat once presented with a deal to reduce charges and jail time. Only a small percentage "stand tall", and it's typically when they only face relatively minor time.

When listing all those great characters we have mourned--Prop Joe, Bodie, Stringer, D'Angelo--don't forget Wallace.

It's a crying shame we never got to see Prop Joe lay waste to an all-you-can-eat buffet. There is no justice in this world of SimCo's.
