Hi everyone. Just going through the Wire again for the 3rd or 4th time and im still confused about the details on the illegal wiretap in Season 5. So, this is what I think is happening.. They needed a wiretap approval because this is monitored or you need some kind of registration code to start up the wire tap. The real tap was never connected and allowed Freamon to run his illegal tap in the warehouse unnoticed. Im at an almost complete loss on ep 7 when Freamon and McNulty make a call posing as the killer. I thought the 'real' wiretap was placed on the payphone that the reporter (-who made up the story-) received a call from the 'serial killer'. So why would McNulty and Freamon have Signor at the harbor with a cell phone. Surely the other police etc know they are up on a payphone and not a mobile and would therefore question what was going on. I realise the whole idea of the call (that was masked as Marlo's number) was so they could intercept pictures from the killers phone (which would actually be Marlo's).
