I'm new to The Wire and am an instant addict. So if this has been mentioned before, forgive me. But what do you think of the passing of the ring in Season 4 as being linked to the ultimate literary ring from The Lord of the Rings. That ring was so powerful that its wearers needed to beware. I'm not sure if it turned people bad, but caused people to come looking for them. From Andre (fatality) to Marlo (cold-blooded) to Omar (almost killed) to Officer Walker (shady) to Michael (the best in him becomes his tragic flaw into the gangster world) . . . tragic. I'm sure I'm reading too much into this or missing something--but I thought I'd share. P.S. Where did Michael get his gun in Season 4 when they got payback on Officer Walker? Did Chris and Snoop entrust him with it? I don't think so because the end of the episode sets him up possibly to be attacked by them (although you can read Marlo's "yeah" in that scene later as a nod of admiration). Any thoughts?

Ah, going around in circles. All that sound and fury and right back where we started. There are plenty of circular images around in Michael's final scene in season 5 as well, and that scene does hammer away at one aspect of the circular theme with gusto. [I hope that's obscure enough not to be a spoiler.]

Rings play a part in S4, but I don't see the Lord of the Rings connection. In the intro shots, for example, there are a progression of circular images from the spinning playground merry-go-round, to the service tray in the deli, to the tire where drugs are being concealed, to the ring, itself.

My niggas got robbed, so they robbed somebody else/you can see it never stops, let that story tell itself... -- "The autumn wind is a Raider, pillaging just for fun. He'll knock you 'round and upside down and laugh when he's conquered and won."

Not sure I'd take that far, i.e. Lord of the Rings. It linked those characters in some way, but I don't think it's that deep. One thing I'm pretty sure of is when Marlo and Chris saw that ring on Mike's chain, they knew for sure that he was for real. As for the incident with Walker, guns are not hard to come by in that town. Could have come from just about anywhere.

You should indicate where you are in watching The Wire because it would be difficult to discuss the meaning of the ring without referencing Michael's ultimate fate.
