contains spoiler When Cutty and Dukie are conversing at the gym, Dukie asks about ..."how do you get from here to the rest of the world?" What are your thoughts for kids in the "hood"? My thought is education. Dukie has brains, but his education has stopped. But...he has free time in the morning before Bug gets home from school. He could school on his own, take the GED, and maybe get to college on financial aid and/or possible scholarship. Education could get him a job that could take him out of the hood. Michael seems to be willing to pay him for taking care of Bug, so this is an option while he is on Mike's "payroll". Thoughts? Also, for especially any of you males who grew up in the inner city. Is there anything that you feel would help kids keep off the corner? Do you think something like Cutty's gym really helps kids keep off the corner? These kids need an option. True, alot of them may not take the choice other than making money slinging, but...is there any real tangible options for them? If gyms, etc. help (also rec centers maybe with basketball, whatever), and maybe something for the girls (arts, gymnastics)....then why can't fundraisers be done for the inner cities to open places like this? It may be a bandaid, but still, its better than nothing. In thiese rec centers, maybe the kids who want to get out of the inner city and into the world, could be worked with and shown about financial aid, etc. That there is a chance and shown the way to go to college and get them out. Comments or ideas? Get some of the rap stars(especially those who are from the "hood"), movie stars and even common people to open their pocket books and help out. -- Edited by c1rose at 01/28/2008 9:08 AM -- Edited by c1rose at 01/28/2008 9:13 AM
