Wire marathon: 25 nights together! (15001 - 20000)

O.K., it's the dead of winter, everyone is strung out waiting for Albrecht to get a sign from heaven, tempers grow short, and we are all losing our focus.

What's needed is a good shot of Wire watching!

S1/S2 are now out on dvd, and a lot of you have taped the show so it's possible for us to watch the first 25 episodes together again, and then chat it up here.
The idea is simple:
Two nights a week on the schedule below, we all watch the episode, starting with S1/E1 and then discuss it that night or the next day. The balance of the week is for ongoing discussion, and will allow those with schedule conflicts to catch up. For those without video, we will post episode summaries ahead of time so you can join in. Granted, the element of speculation about upcoming shows is lost, but even there it might be fun to ponder missed opportunities and alternate plot arcs.

This little journey will get us past winter, and into spring, when we all need to shed that 'Television Tan', and get outdoors. So here we go; Stringer, D'Angelo, Wallace and Sobotka are all alive again. Avon is out of jail, and the detail is yet to meet.
join us for a Wire marathon!

Rainy, the main reason I reflect on Chris is because he's The Man for Marlo. His right hand. With Bodie you could compair it more to a Kannard doing what he did because he was at the bottom working his way up killing somebody that although unresonable in the civil world makes sense in the criminal world. Wallace and Brandon equated more so to sound business disisions in the drug game. The security guard from season 4 didn't cost Marlo business. No one would have even known about the face off to loss any respect for Marlo.

The killing of Chris's abuser may be a long shot. Maybe who ever abused Chris got away and Chris needed an avenue to take out the agression and Marlo saw that and took advantage of it. After all Marlo saw something in Michael from his first impression.
Thier relationship is dynamic to sa the least.

Thinking back to The Corner, I recall Robert Chew played a character who worked in a shoe store. I also think (but I'm not really sure) D'Andre McCullough for a little while worked in said shoe store. I bring this up in light of Poot's leaving the game to take just such a position. I also sort of recall D'Andre didn't last too long in the position and wound up dealing again.

Can any of you Corner experts confirm or correct a wondering Dempsy?

Unfortunately, improbably, but predictably, I got as far as the outer banks of the OR, and was sent packing. This time it was due to my lingering bout with bronchitis. My lungs are clear, but I've got a terrible cough. Being a huge MLB fan, I'm skeptical about a third strike. At this point dear friends, the surgery is OFF- indefinitely. But I appreciate all of the peace and love that was sent my way.

Wolfpriest,

What did Marlo do to win Chris' loyalty? Offered him money and power.

I don't think there's any sexual component.

How did Avon get Wallace's best friends to kill him. How'd he get them to kill innocent Gant, torture Brandon? and on and on in the story, the same dynamic played out over and over.

The drug bosses get their employees to do things so over the top, when the same employees would resist with everything in them being exploited in anywhere near that bad of a way by normal companies, the military, etc.

I guess that would make Marlo like Hussan and Mcnulty and Lester Rummy and Chaney.

Makes you wonder about the back stories to some of the many hundreds of murders committed in major cities.

exerpt from a Newsweek interview of Simon about the end of the series...

2/21/08

Q: When a friend who loves the show asked me to describe the fifth season so far, I told him "Everyone pretty much goes nuts." It's a flip summary, for sure, but is it accurate?

A: I think it's flip, sorry. The season is about how far individuals and institutions and society in general can go on a lie. And if you think that theme is hyperbolic and that lies as big as manufactured serial killers and hyped newspaper copies are too big and too outrageous to sustain themselves, I'd simply point to this ugly mess of a war we are in, why we are in it, what was printed and broadcast and declared by the nation's elite and its top media outlets. You look at Iraq and how we got there and McNulty and Templeton are pikers by comparison. The season is about the chasm between perception and reality in American life and how we are increasingly without the tools that allow us to recognize our true problems, much less begin to solve them. Everybody goes crazy? Who? McNulty? Freamon? They quit playing by the rules in a rigged game. That's almost a form of sanity, self-destructive as it might turn out to be.
