The Wire Reality

I thought it would be nice if we had a thread to list all the many non-actors who have had parts on The Wire through the years.

Casual viewers have no idea that their screens are chock full of real lawmen and gangsters, rappers, politicians, and all kinds of real people from Baltimore whose lives or histories were somehow related to the series.

I only know a few of the names so would enjoy learning about all those I'm unaware of.

Enjoy :)

Here's an article about Little Melvin (who plays the deacon).

http://www.examiner.com/a-1256782~No_remorse_for__Little_Melvin_.html

The author of the article is also part of the 'Wire reality.' Michael Olesker was a Sun columnist. Gus talked a bout a column written by Olesker on the homeless story.

Reverend Dr. Frank M. Reid of Baltimore's AME Church played himself during the intro scene in season 4 prior to the mayoral election.

Backyardbuglight,

On Dennis "Cutty" Wise. Thank you for reminding me of him. Can you help here?

Wikipedia says this character was based on a real person, hitman, Baltimore, 1980's, and mentioned in The Corner.

I think his wife used to come and talk to us Wire fans here on the boards. Mrs. Wise was telling us about his books and encouraging us to buy them. He is in prison still and writes book about crime and prison from his point of view.

(So, his story wouldn't be exactly like Cutty's on the Wire because Cutty was released after 20 years.)

Am I putting all these pieces together about the right Dennis Wise?

Here's a link to an interview, Dennis Wise, did about his books:

I'm sure there's more than one Dennis Wise in the world, but I wondered if the same man is the one mentioned in this article about troublesome prisoners being shipped from their home prisons to remote locations to disrupt their influence on prison population:

gone a long time, new job and all, just checking in and catching up on some reading as we wind down this wonderful show, and to this topic, might add, one former State senator, Larry Young, in the scene where Clay Davis announced his front of the courthouse vigil, playing his current role as morning talk show host on 1010AM, WOLB, the sister station of 1450 AM WOL, where Cathy Hughes started the Radio One empire. I hope Clay is not a totally accurate portrayal of what fate befell Senator Young, who Cathy hired upon his ouster from the Maryland state house

Bill Zorzi, who has written for "The Wire" the past two seasons, is a former reporter and editor for The Sun of Baltimore.

Reporter Bill Zorzi plays himself on The Wire.

During his nearly 20 years at The Sun, Zorzi covered a variety of beats ? cops and courts among them ? but for most of his newspaper career, he reported on government and politics. For five years in the mid-1990s, he wrote "The Political Game," a weekly column about Maryland politics. He left reporting in 1998 to become The Sun's Weekend Metropolitan Editor and later was Assistant City Editor.

Zorzi, a Baltimore native, left the paper in 2002 to develop a miniseries for HBO about the volatile events surrounding a federal public housing desegregation case in Yonkers, NY ? a project that is ongoing.

from wiki

"Producer Robert F. Colesberry makes an uncredited cameo appearance as homicide detective Ray Cole, whom he plays over the course of the first two seasons."

I believe the death of the character Ray Cole was written to reflect the death of Wire producer Robert Colesberry and both were mourned at the wake at the bar in season two.

Yes most of them are all relations to Fran Boyd one of the main characters in the Corner. Also from the Corner Blue Epps shows up briefly in Butchie's bar arguing about wine I believe
Fran shows up once or twice as well handing out stuff in Hamsterdam and taking Bubbles' blood in S5

Backyardbuglight,

Guessing the people you mentioned are all related to the group of real people that Simon and Burns befriended during their long investigation prior to writing about their lives in The Corner?

I love the way they've been brought forward into the cast of The Wire. There's just something so just about that.

Officer Diggs the one who drove the boat McNutty was on in Season 2 is played by Officer Jef Fugitt of the Marine division

Puddin - is one of Bodies crew that gets into the shootout and kills the 9 year old kid in season 2 is played by DeRod deAndres McCullough's 1/2 brother

Cherry - the guy with the weird hat that tells stringer He can really stomp on the shit season 2 when they get Prop Joes package is played by Stanly Boyd DeAndre's and DeRods uncle

the guy Avon and Dee go visit in Season one is Stanly's brother Scoogie Boyd

the city election board secretary when Lester asks for all the records is Tyreeka Freamon the mother of DeAndre's kid

most of these except Diggsy are all in the corner I'd recomend reading the book or renting the series The series has lots of the Wire actors and they are all reverse If you're good in the Wire You're bad on the corner Lester and Daniels are both junkies
